DECEMBER

Painting Experiments
Indirect Painting Technique

December 4th  – 18th
Thursdays 10am-2pm
Cost- $235 (model fee included)

This class is designed for students who are interested in learning about a traditional method of painting in oils.  Students will practice an indirect painting technique painting the model from observation.  Beginning with gray palette, students will complete a monochromatic underpainting of a portrait, called a grisaille.  Color will be developed using glazes, or thin washes of paint.  This class is meant to provide a more thorough understanding of the opaque and transparent properties of oil paint and is recommended for students who are already comfortable with painting but are looking to expand their knowledge of traditional painting techniques.  Art historical references and demonstrations will be used to help solidify concepts.

JANUARY 2009

Figure Structure

January 7th – February 4th
Wednesdays 10am-2pm
Cost- $375  (model fee included)

This class is designed to teach students how to look at and record the figure proportionately.  Often students jump into painting the figure before they really understand the underlying structure.  This class will not only help students understand figure structure but will also give participants the tools to draw from life quickly and accurately.  Figure drawing based on observation and analysis is the foundation for figure painting and is a requirement in every art school.  This class will offer students the exciting experience of being in a figure drawing class while increasing their observational skills.  Charcoal drawing only. No prior figure drawing experience is required and all
levels are welcome.

FEBRUARY-MARCH

Painting from Photographs

February 25th  – March 25th
Wednesdays, 10am - 2pm
Cost:  $350

This class is designed for students who have already participated in one or more of my painting or drawing classes and are interested in applying the methodology learned there to painting the figure in oils using a photograph for reference.  Students may also work from photographs of landscapes; however, the class will primarily focus on the figure. There are many inherent difficulties when translating from 2-dimensional images and often it is obvious when the source material of a piece is a photograph.  In this class we will learn to counteract the camera’s tendency to distort imagery and alter values.  Topics covered will include choosing, composing, and lighting subject matter, manipulating photos on a computer, avoiding flatness, creating depth, and interpreting color.  As always, demonstrations and historical references will be given to solidify the concepts that are introduced.  Students are encouraged to bring their own laptops to class in order to practice editing possibilities.

Please register early to ensure your place and to receive the necessary materials list ahead of time.  Class sizes are kept small to insure that all participants receive individual attention from the instructor.   The class is structured to maximize painting time within four hours and therefore there is no scheduled lunch break.
